What I Advocate re Health Safety Consultants

November 28th, 2009

It’s felt in many companies that, when each and every member of staff has adequate health and safety education, they are adequately prepared to manage a catastrophe. The truth is though, a basic education in safety regulations and risk asessment simply isn’t enough. Equipping your workers, hiring a skilled supervisior and promoting frequent practise are all important factors.

All teams must have a professional supervisor to observe staff performance, however this individual must also perform an even larger role on the floor. Your selection of supervisor is required to realise the importance of health and safety education and be able to get other staff feeling enthusiastic about it. As well as insuring compliance with health and safety regulations, the job of a supervisor includes supervising employee performance as well. This is not a simple undertaking. A good standard product knowledge is a necessity for a supervisory position in addition to an in depth knowledge of the latest regulations regarding safety, risk assessment and emergency assistance techniques.

Just supplying basic training in health and safety isn’t enough for your staff. To positively find a hazard they need experience. Staff need to understand how to deal with safety hazards and understanding what to do if the unexpected happens. Only when these processes have become second nature are employees completely protected. Adequate safety equipment is equally as essential to the safety of your workers as any training. If they don’t have equipment that is needed, or determine that equipment is broken when they are needed, the education your employees have undergone is a waste of time.

You need to check often to ascertain if you possess all the gear you need and to check it is working properly too. When an item won’t come up to the relevant standards, make sure it is mended or serviced as swiftly as possible. The right health and safety education is critical to the health of your staff, but in addition they also require the right gear, the opportunity to practise, and an experienced supervisor who gets employees excited about working safely. Only then will adopting health and safety legislation will before long become established in the culture of your business rather than an inconvenience for staff to remember all the time.
