Playing with Play Money

September 14th, 2009

So I decided for the sake of artistic research, to play a little poker online for “play money.” Let me start by saying this, you can’t play poker at these casino online tables. Ever. Every raise is getting called by someone or reraises. It takes a huge amount of tweaking your game to get used to playing at these stakes. So why play for play money? Well, the answer is simple. You get a lot of post flop experince. You can usually limp into over 75% of the pots just calling. You may have to call small raise every once in a while, but you’ll still be seeing over 75% of the flops, usually with garbage. The benefit is that you’ll be able to practice reading boards and putting people on hands. That’s still a fairly solid exercise in and of itself. And if you can get good at reading hands at free online poker games, then you can read hands anywhere. Don’t worry about the first few games you raise on the button with KK and get reraised with 2-7 off, like I said, you have to forget about preflop play in these games. It’s all an exercise to learn to read boards better and learn to put people on hands. Don’t forget to turn off your Hold Em manager, as it’ll greatly skew your stats if you leave it running.
